Motivation & Training Partners

Napa Valley Marathon is only 5 weeks away. Unfortunately for the "Mary & Gerry" team, it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Gerry's plantar fasciitis is still bothering him. I've never suffered from plantar (knock on wood), but it's certainly living up to it's reputation of "taking forever to heal" in Gerry's case.

The good news is that Gerry's really becoming quite the swimmer, as he's been swimming 3 times a week. Too bad that swimming doesn't translate to marathon training. Gerry is such a good sport as far as injuries are concerned and doesn't complain, though he is understandably frustrated.

My definition of a Training Partner isn't necessary someone that accompanies me at my training pace on my runs, but instead someone who is training for the same race and can share the trials & tribulations of the training program. It was fun & exciting when Gerry & I both had the common goal of training for Napa. (Even though we seldom run at the same pace, we run "together" at the same time & place most of the time.) Since Gerry's plantar injury I have lost some of my motivation. It's not as fun training knowing that Gerry (training partner, husband, bestfriend, co-owner of RaceReady) isn't able to do so.

So, we'll set our sights on a future goal further down the road. There's a wonderful 10 mile race in beautiful Santa Barbara in April....and a beautiful trail race in scenic Big Bear in June...the running & racing possibilities are limitless once the body is healthy!

Disney, RockNRoll Phoenix & Apparel Conference

We're Back! Sometimes it can feel like a vacation to be home for awhile after multiple trips within a short period of time.

We were in Orlando for the Disney Marathon, January 4 through January 8. The Expo was held at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex. Many RaceReady customers came by to say Hello. We really enjoy meeting our customers and appreciate them taking the time to introduce themselves. We are pleased to have an excellent distributor in Puerto Rico, Koishma Promotions.

Carmen & Javier of Koishma came by to see us. It was great to meet them finally, after doing business with them for the past few years. Carmen ran the Half Marathon as a Team In Training participant. She finished her First Half Marathon ever in 2 hours 18 minutes!

Since Gerry & I were nursing injuries, we didn't participate in the events. Thank goodness our hotel had a nice outdoor pool for lap swimming and also a workout room with an elliptical trainer, so we weren't total slugs.

The following weekend we were in Phoenix for the Rock N Roll Expo. Elite Racing, the promoter of the race, certainly does get "the Numbers." Over 30,000 runners in the combined Half & Full Marathons. And, nearly 2/3 of the participants are women! Ladies Rock!

Gerry & I talked to the very knowledgable staff at Scottsdale Running Company and learned of the intricate trail system that runs throughout Phoenix & Scottsdale. This proved to be an excellent place to run! Soft surface of dirt or loose gravel for the entire 11 miles that I ran. Check out the mileage distances....You could run all day along this Canal System! I wish other major cities would take note.

We returned home Sunday evening and less than 20 hours upon our return, we boarded a Monday afternoon flight to Houston. We were participants in the annual Fleet Feet Franchise Apparel Conference. The Fleet Feet Stores are a very reputable group of technical running stores. I would definitely recommend visiting a Fleet Feet Store if there is one nearby. The owners & personnel are a friendly, knowledgable group of people! Gerry & I were glad to be a part of this Conference and appreciate the business we've had over the years with several of the Fleet Feet Stores.

Now it's time to do some catching up here at the Office. Gerry is still battling plantar fasciitis and my pulled hamstring muscle is not completely healed, so our Napa Valley Marathon is not looking good. Once we're healthy again, we can pick another race to do. There's certainly no shortage of races these days!
